Know the real difference between llamas and alpacas

A frequent question we receive here at Dreams Eco Park is what the difference is between llamas and alpacas. That's why we've prepared this article so you can find out once and for all what the real difference is between llamas and alpacas.

Where they're from

But where are these adorable creatures from, anyway? Both are ruminant herbivores, but there are some characteristics that differentiate them. They are predominantly found in Peru, Bolivia and Chile. They are the representatives of camels and dromedaries in South America, as well as being extremely important animals for the development of the Inca people!

How to spot a llama?

The main characteristic of the llama is its size. They are the largest camelids in South America, and are considered the largest domesticated animal in the South American region. According to Peru Travel, they can reach up to 1.2 m in height and weigh around 110 kg. Its long legs and neck, erect ears, large eyes and long coat set it apart from other camelid species.

How to identify an Alpaca?

Although alpacas are also ruminant mammals, related to camels, unlike llamas they are the smallest domestic camelids. The average size of these animals can reach up to 90 cm in height and weigh between 55 kg and 65 kg.

Main differences between llamas and alpacas

  • Alpacas are smaller and lighter than llamas
  • Llamas' ears are larger and erect, but alpacas' ears are smaller and pear-shaped.
  • Alpacas have a smaller face shape than their "cousins" llamas, who have a larger face shape.
  • One of the main differences between llamas and alpacas is their coat. The hair of llamas is thicker, less uniform and rougher than that of their "cousins". Alpaca hair is softer and of higher quality, and is considered more valuable for the textile industry.
