The care routine for the birds and animals at Eco Park in Foz do Iguaçu has changed somewhat in recent days. With thermometers hitting 40 degrees, the llamas, ostriches and even the cows have been taking hose baths. The "Bird Immersion" aviary, meanwhile, has been fitted with water sprinklers to refresh the more than 50 species that live there, including parrots and macaws.
The animals at the Mini Farm, such as the horses, mini pigs, giant rabbits and goats, were given popsicles and cold fruit to cool off on these hot days.
According to Eco Park veterinarian Stacy Wu, these environmental enrichments are actions taken by the park to improve the animals' quality of life and well-being. "High temperatures make animals stressed, alter the functioning of their intestines and make digestion difficult," she explained.
To avoid these physical and emotional problems, the animals' diet is changed on hot days. They are given lighter, lower-calorie foods. Birds, for example, cool their internal organs by breathing or ingesting liquids, unlike humans who perspire. "Drinking cooler water and bathing with a hose is an option to help them," he explained.
The park
The Eco Park is a space for raising awareness and caring for birds, animals and the Atlantic Forest. The main focus is to tell the story of man's relationship with animals through animal conditioning demonstrations, controlled interactions between visitors and the species under their care and artistic exhibitions.
It is open daily from 9am to 5:30pm. The Criollo Horse and Birds of Prey presentations take place at two times: in the morning at 10am and in the afternoon at 3.30pm.
Between 9 a.m. and 5.30 p.m., you can visit the Mini Farm and the "Bird Immersion" aviary.
The Eco Park is located next to the Dreams Park Show, home to the Wax Museum, Wonders of the World, Dinosaur Valley, Ice Bar and the Dreams Motor Show. Less than 15 minutes from the city center and five minutes from Iguaçu National Park.
